Cold Press vs Expeller Pressing vs Refined Oil: A Production Decision Guide
Most people shopping for an oil press are asking the wrong question first. They ask “how many kilograms per hour?” before they have decided what product they are selling. Capacity is easy to buy. The processing method decides your price, your customer, your packaging, your shelf life and your competition — and it is very hard to change later.
This guide explains the three routes edible oil can take from seed to bottle: cold pressing, hot or expeller pressing, and refining. It explains the mechanism, then the commercial consequence of each. It contains no yield percentages and no prices, because those depend on your seed, your moisture content, your market and your costs. Instead, it shows you how to measure them yourself before you commit money.
The three routes in one sentence each
- Cold pressing squeezes oil out mechanically while keeping the temperature low, so the oil keeps the character of the seed but some oil stays behind in the cake.
- Hot pressing (expelling) heats or cooks the seed before and during pressing so more oil releases, at the cost of aroma, colour and heat-sensitive compounds.
- Refining takes crude oil — usually solvent-extracted or hot-pressed — and strips it with heat and chemistry into a neutral, pale, long-life commodity oil.
They are not three grades of the same product. They are three different products sold to three different kinds of buyer.
What actually happens inside a screw press
A screw press (also called an expeller) is a rotating helical screw turning inside a slotted barrel. The seed enters at one end. As it moves along, the space it occupies shrinks, so pressure rises. Oil is forced out through the slots and drains away. The de-oiled solids are compacted and pushed out at the far end as a cake or as pellets.
Two things generate heat here whether you want them or not: friction between the seed and the barrel, and the mechanical work of compression. This is the whole story of cold pressing. Cold pressing does not mean “no heat” — it means heat is controlled and kept low rather than deliberately added.
Three factors control how hot the seed gets:
- Screw speed. Faster means more throughput and more friction heat.
- Restriction at the outlet. A tighter nozzle raises pressure, presses harder, and raises temperature.
- Seed condition. Moisture and cleanliness change how the material behaves under compression.
That is why the same machine can be run in a way that protects the oil or in a way that maximises extraction. The operator’s settings are part of the process, not just the hardware.
Our presses carry a small heating element on the press head. Its purpose is to bring the barrel to a stable working temperature at start-up so the first kilograms run cleanly and the press does not choke on a cold barrel. It is not a cooker and it is not there to roast the seed.
Cold pressing: what you gain and what you give up
What survives. Aroma compounds, natural colour, and heat-sensitive minor components stay largely intact because they are never cooked. This is why cold-pressed black cumin, sesame, pumpkin seed, walnut and flax oils smell and taste like the seed they came from, and why cosmetic formulators buy argan, avocado and almond oil this way.
What you give up. Extraction is less complete. Real oil remains in the cake — that is the physical price of not heating. What it demands from you. Cold pressing is less forgiving:
- Seed must be clean. Stones and metal damage the screw and barrel; dust and hulls change the pressing behaviour.
- Moisture must be in a workable range. Too wet and the press slips and pushes wet meal through; too dry and the material can jam or heat excessively.
- Oil needs settling or filtering. Fresh cold-pressed oil is cloudy with fine solids that must be removed before bottling or they shorten shelf life.
- Shelf life is shorter than refined oil. Light, oxygen and warmth are the enemies. Dark glass, good closures, cool storage.
Hot pressing and expelling: throughput bought with heat
In a hot process the seed is conditioned — heated, sometimes cooked or roasted, sometimes flaked — before it enters the press, and the press itself is run harder. Heat lowers oil viscosity, breaks down cell walls and releases oil that cold pressing leaves behind. Throughput per machine goes up. Extraction goes up.
The product changes with it. Colour darkens. Flavour becomes roasted rather than fresh. Some heat-sensitive components are reduced or lost. For some products this is exactly what the market wants — roasted sesame oil is a hot-processed product by definition, and it is not a defect. For a cosmetics buyer sourcing an unroasted carrier oil, the same heat is a rejection.
Hot pressing also raises operating demands: more energy, more equipment before the press, more cleaning, and a crude oil that usually needs more downstream treatment.
Refining: manufacturing a commodity
Refining is a different industry, not a bigger press. Crude oil — very often obtained by solvent extraction rather than pressing — is put through a sequence of steps that typically includes degumming, neutralisation, bleaching and deodorising. The result is pale, neutral in taste and smell, stable at high cooking temperatures, and long-lasting on a supermarket shelf.
The economics are the point. A refinery is a large capital plant that lives on scale, tight margins and continuous running. Refined oil competes on price per litre against global commodity supply. You do not enter that market with a small press, and you should not try.
There is nothing wrong with refined oil. It is the right product for high-heat frying, for industrial food manufacturing and for consumers who want a cheap neutral oil. It is simply a different business.

The cake is not waste — and it is not equal
Whatever you press, most of the seed’s mass leaves as cake. How you value it changes the whole business case.
Cold-pressed cake was never cooked and never touched a solvent. It retains more residual oil, which means more energy per kilogram as feed. Because it is a clean, single-seed, unheated by-product, it can often go to higher-value channels than generic feed — livestock and poultry feed, aquaculture, pet food ingredients, or in some cases food use such as protein flour, depending entirely on the seed and your local food regulations. Some seeds produce cake that is not suitable for all animals; check species-specific guidance for your seed before you sell it as feed.
Hot-pressed cake is drier in oil terms and is a standard feed ingredient.
Solvent-extracted meal is the most fully de-oiled and is traded as a bulk protein commodity, but it comes out of a solvent process and is governed accordingly.
Practical advice: price your cake before you buy a press. Call two local feed buyers and ask what they pay per tonne for your specific seed cake and what moisture and packaging they require. In small operations the cake revenue is frequently the difference between a marginal business and a comfortable one, and almost no first-time buyer models it.
Which business are you actually in?
Answer these honestly. They matter more than any specification.
- Who is your buyer? A delicatessen, a cosmetics formulator and a supermarket chain buy on completely different criteria. Name a real buyer, not a category.
- Are you selling a story or a litre? Cold pressing sells origin, freshness, single-seed traceability and small-batch dates. If your customer will not pay for those, you are paying for a benefit you cannot sell.
- Do you control the seed? Growers and cooperatives who own their raw material get the strongest advantage from cold pressing, because provenance is real and verifiable.
- What is your volume ceiling, realistically? Small-scale cold pressing scales by adding presses, not by finding one enormous machine. That is a feature: capacity grows in step with demand.
- Can you handle a shorter shelf life? That means faster turnover, better packaging and colder storage. If your distribution is slow and hot, be realistic.
- Is your product roasted by tradition? If yes, cold pressing is the wrong process for it, regardless of how good it sounds in marketing.
A useful blunt rule: if you cannot explain why your oil should cost more than the refined oil on the shelf next to it, do not go into cold pressing yet — go and find that answer first.
Get your own numbers instead of borrowing ours
Anyone quoting you a fixed yield percentage for your seed, without testing your seed, is guessing. Oil content varies by variety, growing season, region, storage time and moisture. Here is how to obtain real figures before you commit:
- Take a representative sample of the exact seed you will buy commercially — not a premium sample from a different supplier.
- Record its condition. Note moisture, cleanliness and storage age. Have moisture measured if you can; it is the single most common cause of disappointing results.
- Run a controlled press test. Weigh the seed in. Weigh the oil out. Weigh the cake out. Note the settings used.
- Filter and settle the oil, then weigh it again. Your saleable yield is what remains after clarification, not what leaves the press.
- Have the cake analysed for residual oil if the cake is part of your revenue plan.
- Repeat with different settings. Slower and gentler versus faster and tighter will give you two different points on the trade-off between quality and extraction. Choose the one your market pays for.
- Build your cost model from those numbers only. Seed cost, electricity, labour, bottling, losses, cake income.

Matching the decision to a machine
Once you know which product you are making, capacity selection becomes simple arithmetic rather than guesswork.
- CSP-5 — the smallest single-phase machine. Suited to product development, testing a new seed, small artisan batches, and sampling before you scale.
- CSP-10 — single-phase, for a small commercial operation, a farm shop, or a growing specialty label.
- CSP-15 — still single-phase, for steady daily production where mains supply is limited to standard household-type power.
- CSP-30 — the largest single unit, and three-phase. This is the step where you need proper industrial power at the site. Check your electrical supply before choosing it, not after.
- CSP-LINE — several presses arranged in sequence as a modular production line, for when demand has outgrown one machine. Capacity is added in steps rather than by replacing everything you own.
Two practical notes. First, always size against your 24-hour capability, not the hourly figure, then subtract time for cleaning, changeover between seeds and filtering. Second, if you press several different seeds, plan cleaning between them — cross-contamination of aroma is a real quality complaint in specialty oils, and allergen carry-over (nuts, peanut, sesame) is a food safety matter, not a preference.
Documentation to ask any supplier for
You are importing food-contact machinery. Whichever supplier you choose, ask for these in writing before payment:
- A clear statement of which parts contact the oil and what materials they are made from.
- Electrical specification matching your country’s voltage, phase and frequency, with the plug or terminal arrangement stated.
- Which documents the manufacturer can supply for customs clearance and for your local food authority, and which you must obtain yourself in your own country.
- Spare parts list, with the wear parts identified and their availability.
- Operating and cleaning instructions in a language your operators read.
- What test data, if any, exists for your specific seed.
Requirements differ by destination country. A responsible supplier will tell you what they can provide and will not claim approvals they do not hold. Verify anything critical with your own importer or customs broker.

Is cold pressing really done without any heat at all?
No, and any supplier who says so is overselling. Friction between the seed and the barrel, plus the work of compression, always generates some heat. Cold pressing means no heat is deliberately added to cook the seed and the process is run so temperature stays low. Screw speed, outlet restriction and seed moisture are the levers that control it. The small heater on our press heads is used to bring the barrel to a stable working temperature at start-up, not to roast the seed.
How much oil will I actually get from my seed?
We will not quote you a figure, because it depends on your seed variety, growing season, storage age, moisture content and press settings. Anyone who gives you a fixed percentage without testing your material is guessing. The correct method is a controlled press test on a representative sample of the exact seed you will buy: weigh the seed in, the oil out and the cake out, then weigh the oil again after filtering, because clarified oil is what you can actually sell. Why would I accept lower extraction from cold pressing?
Because you are not selling litres, you are selling a different product. Cold-pressed oil keeps the aroma, colour and heat-sensitive compounds of the seed, which is what specialty food, cosmetic and nutraceutical buyers pay a premium for. The oil that stays in the cake is also not lost value — cold-pressed cake carries more residual oil and is worth more as feed. If your buyer will not pay for those qualities, cold pressing is the wrong process for your business.
Can I use one machine for cold pressing and hot pressing?
A screw press can be run gently or hard, and that alone shifts the balance between quality and extraction. But a true hot process means conditioning the seed before it reaches the press — heating, cooking or flaking — which is separate equipment and a separate workflow. Decide which product you are selling first. Running a press hard to chase extraction while marketing the result as cold pressed is a claim you will not be able to defend.
What should I do with the press cake?
Sell it. Cake is most of the mass of the seed and it is a genuine revenue line, most commonly as animal feed for livestock, poultry or aquaculture, and in some cases as a pet food or food ingredient depending on the seed and your local regulations. Before you buy a press, call two local feed buyers and ask what they pay per tonne for your specific seed cake and what moisture and packaging they require. Also check species-specific guidance, because some seed cakes are not suitable for all animals.
Which model should I start with?
Start from your daily output target and your electrical supply. CSP-5 suits product development, seed trials and small artisan batches. CSP-10 and CSP-15 suit small to steady commercial production and run on single-phase power. CSP-30 is the largest single unit and requires three-phase supply, so confirm your site power before choosing it. When one machine is no longer enough, CSP-LINE adds presses in sequence so capacity grows in steps instead of forcing a full replacement. Always size against the 24-hour figure, then allow time for cleaning, seed changeover and filtering.
Do I need to filter the oil, or can I bottle it straight from the press?
You need to clarify it. Oil leaving the press carries fine solids and is cloudy. Those solids settle, look unattractive in a bottle and shorten shelf life. Plan for settling tanks or filtration as part of the process, and remember that your saleable yield is measured after clarification, not at the press outlet.
